Review the conversation settings
Private chats and groups differ
Open the chat information and look for automatic deletion settings. Also review defaults for new chats. Menu locations vary by client, and group settings may require administrative permissions. Do not change a group’s settings without the appropriate authority.
Compare the missing messages with the timer
A pattern is not proof by itself
Messages disappearing at a similar age may match an auto-delete period. A participant could also have deleted history manually. Check the setting and context rather than inferring the cause from age alone.
Turning it off does not undo the past
Check existing copies
Changing the timer does not recreate messages already removed. Look for previously saved copies if you need lost content. Secret Chats have their own self-destruct mechanics and should be considered separately.
Plan how to keep important information
Confirm the saving method
Agree on an appropriate record of important discussions. Do not assume every bot can capture disappearing or restricted media. Use only data you are entitled to access and verify what the chosen tool actually retains.
Frequently asked questions
Will disabling auto-delete restore my messages?
No. Changing the setting does not recover content already deleted.
Is auto-delete the same as a Secret Chat?
No. Ordinary chats can have auto-delete too; Secret Chats have additional technical differences.
