Create your first folder

  1. Open Settings in your Telegram app.
  2. Find Chat Folders and choose the option to create a folder.
  3. Name it, for example Work.
  4. Add conversations and save.

Folders are available in mobile and desktop clients; the Settings location depends on your app. Open the new tab and check that your selected conversation appears.

Choose included and excluded chats

You can select chat types or add conversations individually. For example, an Orders folder might contain customer conversations and your team group, without news channels. Avoid a broad category when you want a short, focused list.

If a chat is missing, inspect both included and excluded chats in the folder settings. Return to All Chats to locate the conversation itself.

Folders, archives and group topics are different

A folder organizes your conversation list. The archive moves a chat out of the main list. A topic organizes discussion within a group. Creating a folder does not create a group or move messages into a separate backup.

Try an action-based name such as Reply or Read. This can make the tab easier to use than a long list of unrelated conversations.

Before sharing a folder

Check the folder settings for an invite link and review which groups or channels it includes. This is not a link to a copy of your private conversations: personal chats are not shared this way. Tell recipients which communities they are adding.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chat belong to more than one folder?

Yes. Folders organize conversations rather than create separate copies of their history.

Will a folder preserve deleted messages?

No. Use an export or another suitable saving method for a separate copy of available history.
